Remembering a future autumn day

That morning we woke up and got ready at 7:30. The autumn air was cool and the sky was overcast. The weather called for a light misting of rain throughout the day- perfect! We found ourselves matching each other’s outfit. She had her low boots and skinny jeans with a knitted sweater. She topped off her look with an autumnal colored scarf and her favorite pleather jacket. I wore my mid-tone brown Chukkas with a pair of fitted jeans and layered one of my favorite tees with a flannel patterned long sleeve that complimented her sweater and scarf.

Before our busy Saturday we decided to go for coffee and walk in the park. We left the apartment and headed to our favorite coffee shop downtown. After getting the goods we headed towards the park for a morning stroll. We walked through the park and took a selfie, or two, on the bridge over the irrigation canal. As we walked we enjoyed the cool morning and the light fog that highlighted the colors of fall on the trees and the grass. As we rounded the final corner and arrived back at the car we decided we’d better get to the store, before it gets too busy. We need to get the ingredients for her famous dip to bring tonight.

We get to the store in the knick of time still early enough to not have to fight the crowds. We gather the ingredients for her dip, and a few items we need for this week’s dinners and head home. We drop off our groceries and are thankful to have the shopping done. As she begins to prepare her dish I begin to tidy up the apartment, being sure not to interrupt her delicate process, which is harder said than done…have you seen her, she’s gorgeous I can’t believe we’re together and find myself staring until she snaps me out of it by asking “that” question, “What? What are you staring at?” My only reply, a smart quip like, “Oh, not much, just the most beautiful girl in the world.” By the time the dip is complete and chilling in the fridge it's lunch time and we’re both starving and decide what the heck let’s go get something on our way to the maze.

We decided to stop for a sandwich and enjoy a local favorite, known for their side of queso. After lunch we continue on towards the corn maze, a favorite date spot of ours this time of year. We get there and find that to our surprise it's only half packed and the pumpkin patch seems to still have some quality ones left. We go through the maze hand in hand and find our way through in record time, at least record time for us. Once we emerged from the maze we decided to go on the tractor ride around the farm. We loaded the tractor cart and found ourselves with her sitting on my lap and my arms wrapped securely around her waist. As the tractor puttered our group around the farm, she and I discussed the beauty of the season and admired the young couple and their well-mannered toddler on the ride with us. As the ride came to an end, we checked the time and realized that pumpkins would have to wait for another date; if we didn’t leave now we’d be late.

We rushed home to grab our dish and left as fast as we’d arrived. We had been invited to some friends’ house for a dinner and games party and didn’t want to be late! We got to their house in a fashionable time and enjoyed an evening of table games, VR games, and even a quick game of charades. We devoured morsels of festive foods including her dip with some pita chips as well as topped the evening off with some pumpkin pie and a glass of wine. As we departed we thanked our hosts and promised to have them as our guests soon.

We arrived home and got ready for bed. Before we turned out the lights for the night we sat and read from our Bible study and prayed for our struggles and triumphs, friends and family, and what else spoke to us as needing prayer in the moment. We turned out the lamps on either side of our bed, shared a kiss goodnight, and snuggled to sleep. Tomorrow was church and our day started early and we both needed some sleep. As we began to doze off to sleep, I said another quiet little prayer thanking God for the blessing He’s given me in her and all that she pushes me to do in order to bring glory to Him and love to her.
